A Brief History

Huffman Baptist Church

In 1908 the Huffman community was located approximately 9 miles from
downtown Birmingham, Alabama.Through the years the community has been
swallowed up by a growing Birmingham. Many people in the church still remember
when Huffman was a sleepy little community on the outskirts of “town.”

The Church at Huffman began as a result of a “Sunday School organized in the side room of the Odd Fellows Hall in the summer of 1906.”
Odd Fellows Hall was located on the second story of a General Store –the church
met in a small building attached to the side of the Store. The nearest Baptist
church was well over three miles – doesn’t sound
like much today unless you remember walking, riding a horse, or hitching the horses to the wagon as the only means of travel available! Our history says, “the people were hungry for Bible study and fellowship with their friends and neighbors.” There were ten people who started the church, not including children.
While our name has changed three times, the core values of Huffman Baptist Church extend all the way back to our founding purpose. Our original name was the Huffman Missionary Baptist Church – missions is in our DNA and continues to
shape our purpose. The earliest minutes reveal that “…people were hungry for Bible study and fellowship with their friends and neighbors… they met to worship the Lord in Bible study, teaching, preaching and praise.”

Huffman Baptist Church also values its excellent, creative,
and innovative ministries to its members and its community led by
gifted pastors and committed people. From its beginning until the present
Huffman Baptist has reached out to its community and world so that others might
know the goodness and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our journey has led us most recently to adopt the ActsOne ’08 Challenge, which is based on the scripture reference from the same, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
